- "The ICHING, or Book of Changes, is an ancient book, dating from 1,000"
- "B.C. in the last days of the Shang Dynasty and in the beginning of the"
- "Shou Dynasty. It has been proported to be one of the Five Classics "
- "edited by Confucius. Confucius has stated to have wished for fifty "
- "additional years of life to study the ICHING. "
- " "
- " The text consists of sixty-four short topics, mostly of a moral or "
- "social, and political character. These essays, are based on sixty-"
- "four lineal figures, each made up of six lines, some lines are whole, "
- "and others divided. For each lineal figure, or hexagram, the text "
- "describes its significance, as a whole, with some indication, perhaps,"
- "of the action to be taken in the circumstances which the hexagram is "
- "to represent, and if that action will be lucky or unlucky. Then, "
- "beginning with the first, or bottom line of the hexagram, expressed "
- "by means of a symbolical or emblematical illustration, the signifi- "
- "cance of each line, with a similiar indication of the good or bad "
- "fortune of action taken in connection with it, is explained. The "
- "interpretation of the whole hexagram will be found to be in harmony "
- "with the combined significance of the individual lines that form it."
- " "
- " The undivided and divided line which forms the basis of the hexagram "
- "symbolically can represent numerous concepts; Good and Evil, Male and "
- "Female, God and Devil, Positive and Negative, Go and Stay, etc. "
- "This is consistent with the Yin and Yang symbolism where each arises "
- "from the other. In the ICHING Philosophy, nothing is ever static, "
- "everything is moving. The same with life, things are always changing."
- "Human nature is to resist change or movement. The ICHING guides us in"
- "which way to change or move. "
- " "
- " The ICHING is based on the idea of significant coincidence which is "
- "the principal of synchronicity. The throw of the coins or use of the "
- "yarrow stalks to obtain a hexagram, forms a synchronous event with our"
- "search for advice from the ICHING. The meaning of this coincidence is"
- "obtained from the text of the ICHING. It offers advice as to how we"
- "can best conduct ourselves in the present circumstances and therefore"
- "achieve an accord with the inevitable forces of nature. Its advice is"
- "built upon careful observations of the human situation over thousands"
- "of years. The expressions and imagery used in the chinese version of"
- "the ICHING are based upon the intuitive understanding of its largely"
- "unknown authors, amplified over the centuries by its many comentators."
- " "
- " The ICHING is a program for living, developed over the centuries to"
- "be of universal application. With guidance from the ICHING, a way "
- "forward can be found. Darkness can be turned into light. Only the "
- "receptive soul can find within itself a true path to follow. Those "
- "who do not seek a full knowledge of themselves cannot expect to find "
- "a harmonious route through the life experience. "
